Hello Dennis,

Thanks for responding to my note.

I am not an ancestry.com member and cannot see your tree unfortunately, but it sounds like our ancestors were neighbors. Do you have a GEDCOM uploaded on World Connect that I can look at? I would be very interested in seeing it.

Lahanaght is very close to Upper Lissane (Caheragh). In the Drinagh Tithe Applotment from 1833 I see an Andrew McCarty (McCarthy) listed.

Upper Lissane is where one of my Granddad's McCarthy lines comes from. I think some of the people in Upper Lissane spilled over into Driminidy.

I have some publicly available charts posted here.
http://www.sjbar.com/irishGenealogy/LissaneMcCarthys.jpg

http://www.sjbar.com/irishGenealogy/LissaneMcCarthys.pdf

My granddad on the bottom row, John Humphrey Collins (you'll see his photo) was descended from Charles McCarthy. The relationship I draw between Charles (who married Margaret Young) and brothers Andrew (who married Ellen Hegarty) and Timothy (who married Catherine Donovan) remains rather speculative, and I drew it only after spending many long hours staring at baptism sponsors, assuming Andrew and Timothy also had first-born sons named Cornelius, and listening to an elderly aunt talk about family relationships way back when.

Charles and Andrew lived in Upper Lissane; Timothy in Drimindy. They were Sowney McCarthys. One of Timothy = Kate Donovan's daughters, Honora, married a Daniel Hurley who was from Coolnagarrane (Abbeystrowry), which was my Grandmom's side of the family.

There seem to be a few Hurleys running around our part of Drimoleague and Drinagh. There is a Catherine Hurley married to a Denis Mahony from Bredagh, yet another Hurley line on my Grandmom's side of the family. I don't know when Catherine Hurley = Denis Mahony married or where Catherine Hurley was from. Hurley baptism sponsors of those Mahony children were Mary, Margaret, and Norry.

Granddad had another line of McCarthys from Garryglass in Drinagh. They were McCarthy Knock. Grandmom had a line of McCarthys further west, probably from Gortnascreeny.

Given the close proximity of your Lahanaght people to mine, I wonder if there could be a connection. Unfortunately I am not a direct male descendant so I have no Y-DNA to compare. Have you considered taking an autosomal DNA test? I have a Family Finder test on file at FTDNA.

I am a very active Cork genealogy researcher and author a Cork genealogy website. Do let me know if you think we have something in common. It looks like you are new on the ancestry.com boards so welcome to the boards, and please stick around!

Acch! I cannot edit my original post. ggg-grandfather "Cornelius" should be Charles, and he and Timothy are probably both sons of a Cornelius.

This is a long shot but I'll throw it out. I am looking for earlier information on this father and son, Timothy and Cornelius (Con), ages 67 and 28 respectively, in the 1901 census. This would place Con's birth around 1873:

http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Bredagh/Ki...

I found Timothy's death record after the 1901 census and traced the son Con in the 1911 census to Derrynagree.

I have been going through Irish civil registration films (1864-1880) looking at every Cornelius McCarthy born to a Timothy, so far haven't found him. All the other Corneliuses born to Timothys found so far in the general area are somehow accounted for elsewhere besides Kilmore in 1901.

I am trying to determine if this Timothy is the same Timothy bap. 19-Dec-1835, from Lissane, Caheragh, who is my ggg-grandfather Cornelius McCarthy's younger brother. Kilmore is of interest because when my ggg-parents married in 1860 they lived for a while in Kilmore before settling in Tooreen.

Much thanks for any help you can provide.

Hello,

Looking specifically at the McCarthy families from Kilmore, Lissane, Tooreen, Garryglass.

Tooreen - Cornelius McCarthy and Mary McCarthy McCarthy moved to Tooreen from Kilmore; married 1860. Had seven daughters, my g-grandmother Margaret was the oldest. Have some info on Margaret, sister Nora (immigrated and married O'Brien), sister Ellen (married Maher), parents Cornelius and Mary, can't find death record for Mary. Cornelius and Mary were my grandfather's maternal grandparents.

Kilmore - Timothy, with son Cornelius, b.c. 1873, may have lived in Shandrum and eventually in Derrygrea; Timothy may have married Mary Donovan 1856 in Dunmanway. Investigating whether he was a brother of Cornelius in Tooreen.

Garryglass - Descendants of Cornelius McCarthy and Kate Burke; may have married 1859 in Dunmanway. Looking for relatives and descendants of their oldest son Daniel b. 1863, a well-known schoolmaster. I know Daniel's siblings, wives and names of children. Would like to know more about Cornelius's origin. As Daniel is the oldest boy perhaps his grandfather was also named Daniel...

Lissane - Cornelius McCarthy and Mary Collins McCarthy, had a daughter Margaret, I think Mgt married Richard Caverly. Mgt died 1906, son Andrew Caverly lived in Lissane with his uncle Andrew McC in 1911 census. Still a theory. Does anybody know about Lissane McCarthys?

Timeframe for all from mid-late 19th century, early 20th. Some of these McCarthys were probably Sowney.

I am also keeping tabs on this thread:

This is my McCarthy family (my Grandfather's mother is the oldest girl Margaret):

http://www.sjbar.com/irishGenealogy/LissaneMcCarthys.jpg

Through the mother Mary McCarthy McCarthy, there is a relationship (the nature of which I have yet to establish) to Daniel McCarthy, the National schoolteacher in Carrigbaun. He is listed in the 1911 census:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Carrig...

I have entered several McCarthy records not obviously relevant to my research in the following database:

These are my nearest related McCarthy relatives. The oldest girl Margaret was my Granddad's mother:

The mother Mary McCarthy McCarthy has a relationship to Daniel McCarthy, the national schoolteacher in Carrigbaun, listed in the 1911 census. I have yet to know the exact blood relationship:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Carrig...

I have 1901 census records for McCarthys in the following locations (all in the Skibbereen Drimoleague Drinagh area):

Looking for some direction tracing my McCarthy family back from the earliest info I have:
Parents: Jeremiah McCarthy(b. 1760-70ish) married Mary Coverly/Caverly/Caverley? in Co. Cork. and remained in Ireland.
4 of their sons came (via NY) to Sandwich(Windsor), Essex County, Ontario, Canada between 1820-1825 as part of the project of Col. Talbot to settle the lands along the Talbot Trail.

1) Michael McCarthy(b. abt. 1790 Co Cork Ire) married Catherine Finn(b. abt. 1800, Ire) in Ireland
Child 1 – Jeremiah(b. Jun 22, 1820, Ire)
Child 2 – Ellen(b. Oct 7, 1822, NY) – confirms the timeframe for emigration from Ireland

2) Jeremiah McCarthy(b. abt. 1791 Co Cork Ire.) married Elizabeth O’Flynn(b. abt.1809, Meath Ire.) in Sandwich Ontario, Canada. All children born in Canada

3) Cornelius McCarthy(b. abt. 1795 Co Cork Ire) married Mary Mahoney(b. abt. 1836 Co Cork Ire.) in Buffalo NY. All children born in US

4) Richard McCarthy(b. abt. 1808 Co Cork Ire) married Honora(Anne) Cantilan/Cantilon(b. abt. 1807 Ire) unsure where married. All children born in Canada

Previous researchers have indicated the family may have originated around Skibbereen, Loughmarsh, or Lisheen area. Analysis of the McCarthy & Coverly/Caverly name overlap points to Cooranuller, Caneragh. These areas all appear to be very near one another in the SW corner of Cork. I would appreciate any direction to help me narrow down the search to find a connection.

Hi

I saw your post and it cAught my attention. I have McCarthy and Shanahan galore in my tree. This is because 3 McCarthy siblings married 3 Shanahan siblings. Kitty, Margaret and paddy Shanahan married paddy, Terry and lil McCarthy. So there are double cousins all over the place lol.

I checked and I match a profile you manage as a 5th -6th cousin. Would be interesting to learn more.

My email is noni.mccarthy@gmail.com.

Hi. I am trying to find my husbands family. His father was James Robert McCarthy 1934-2015. He lived most of his adult life in Halifax Nova Scotia. It is believed he was an only child and his fathers name was Robert McCarthy (death around 1969) and his mother Mary (death around 1980). He had a great grandmother that he believes was named Margaret Kidder. Robert or Mary may have had a younger sibling named Laura - she died around 2010 in California.
I am stumped. I can not find anything on any of these individuals. Its a long shot but I am throwing this out there.

Cordelia Hall was my great grandmother, Louisa Hall's sister. If you are able to help I would be interested to hear what happened to Cordelia after she left Blaenavon. My great grandmother emigrated to New Zealand with her husband and six of their twelve children.

Trying to find a cousin of mine named Valerie "Vali." Her last known married name was McCarthy/McCarthey. She is formerly an "ELL." Her parents are Walter A. Ell and Marie Chase (who both died in Portland, Oregon). Vali has a sister named Judy... Does anybody know where I can get a hold of Vali McCarthy/McCarthey? I think she has a daughter named Lisa (McCarthy) Clarke.

I am looking for my nephew born Nov 6, 1967 in Scarborough, Ontario. He was made a Crown Ward of Porcupine (Timmins) CAS on Dec 5, 1967. He was placed with his adoptive parents on Feb 28, 1968 and would have been formally adopted 6 months after that (Aug -Sep 1968). He lived in Sudbury, Ontario. I have some medical information he might want to have. His father may have been Wayne Ellies and his birth name may have been Paul. His mother was Barbara Guidolin. His adoptive parents contacted Timmins CAS for medical information in April 1989.
