So random I stumbled upon your post! I have been searching Denis Carty as how he is related to us. Denis (McCarthy) or Carty Sr. had a tragic death in which he drowned to death on the “Clarence Steamer” on Jan. 18, 1833 (some other sources say 1836) he left from Kilrush headed to Limerick. He had a son named Robert of Birchgrove and he was an avid seafarer (if that’s the right word) and owned both a schooner named “Denis Carty” names after his Dad and a sloop named “Mary” Denis (Senior) had a son Robert who had a son Denis Carty Jr. who came to the US via the “Abian” #160, on May 20, 1846 (he was 25 yrs old) Denis (Jr) had 3 or 4 sons, named: Robert J, William F and John. Possibly a daughter Sarah and another son Dennis W. too(it’s hard navigating Ancestry sometimes when people are NOT certain of FACTS, Exact dates, names etc. and they then link such info to individuals as factual) .... that being said, wife could have been Anne Kearney.
I hope that helps!

Hi is there anyone out there that has McCarthy ancestors from Monard Cork. I have a dna connection to the this family and so does my half uncle. I have some information about them, John McCarthy b 1835 married Catherine Hayes, John's parents were Timothy McCarthy and Julia Daly. John and Catherine had 10 children and one of their children was Garrett McCarthy who married Ellen Mullane who in turn had a daughter Catherine McCarthy 1915 and she married Denis Cronin. This is the only way for me to find my connection with this family as I can't find my paternal grandmother's birth reg anywhere.

Carl, I am not sure in general but I'm very interested in the fact that you have males named Fore(a)nce. I do as well. On my 2 trips to Ireland I was told I needed to know my family "nick-name" in order to research the correct branch as there as so many branches of McCarthy's. I was told that my male Florance's were a key. It seems that of the 43+ branches of McCarthy's only one uses Florance for males. That is McCarthy-Reagh. Each of the 3 known immigrant brothers here in the states had sons named Florance. Nicknames I've hear are Flor, and Fleur. I would suspect that there would be certain female names as well but I can only provide the ones in my line. I have many Ellen's, Catherine's Johanna's and of course Mary's. For instance I've found no Bridget's or Colleen's, etc.
By any chance do you have Carles, Denis, and Daniel as popular names in addition to the Florance? I'd be interested in doing some comparisons with you. My Denis and Charles ended up in WI for the most part, Daniel lived in western NY where his wife's family lived Her name was Johanna Cronin.
Let me know of anything familiar.

Hi, Carl... I am distantly related to Joyce, who also responded. I have a few Eugenes I have found in a line that may be related (I haven't found definitive proof yet), but a lot of Florence/Florance, Charles, Dennis, Daniel, Michael, and Timothy. For the ladies, I have a lot of Mary, Alice, Margaret, Ellen, and Anna. My line is primarily McCarty, but some also use McCarthy :)

I believe I saw Frank on a couple items pertaining to one of my Florences, so that may be so.

My McCarthy fore-bearer was Florence McCarthy (b 1 Oct 1825), son of Eugene McCarthy, who emigrated from Cork to Montreal in 1849 (?) with his wife Mary Alice Saunders and two oldest children, Robert (died age 10) and Ellen. They soon moved to Vermont and were members of the Methodist church, implying that they came over as protestants. They had the following children in Vermont: Charles Timothy McCarthy (1851-1935), Elizabeth Ann McCarthy (1853-1864), Eugene Timothy McCarthy my great great grandfather (1854-1899), Alce McCarthy (1856-1858), Flora McCarthy (1858-1935), Harriet McCarthy (1859-1864), Elmer Daniel McCarthy (1862-1914) and Eva Mary McCarthy (1867-1922).

They did not really follow the traditional Irish naming convention:
First son usually named for the father's father
Second son usually named for the mother's father
Third son usually named for the father
Fourth son usually named for the father's eldest brother
Fifth son usually named for the mother's eldest brother
First daughter usually named for the mother's mother
Second daughter usually named for the father's mother
Third daughter usually named for the mother
Fourth daughter usually named for the mother's eldest sister
Fifth daughter usually named for the father's eldest sister.

I'm pretty sure McCarthy and McCarty are the same name. My ancestors often spelled it McCarty (e.g. most of the civic records of my great great grandparents) and my grandparents said "McCarty" even though they spelled it McCarthy. PS: My McCarthys were protestant not Catholic not sure if saying McCarty had anything to do with that. Probably not.

My name is Tim Kearns and we are from Buffalo NY. Ellen McCarthy was my great grandmother, she married Patrick Kearns my great grandfather in Fitchburg mass.
I am trying to find info on my great grand father and grand mother and their families. I believe my great, great grandfather Patrick's dad (also Patrick Kearns ) married in St Micheals Dún Laoghaire, Dublin, Ireland in 1850. My grandfather was James Kearns and grandmother Margaret (Pearl) Hoolihan they lived at 164 Smith st in Buffalo. I am visiting Ireland in June with my son and daughter for my 60th birthday and am wondering about family there?

Just curious. Do you have dates and place of birth? I have a Viola who was married to a Charles McCarthy - but I only recently found this out and I never heard of children. Could just be a coincidence.

Hi there.

My grandfather, George Murphy, married Terrance and Catherine McCarthy's daughter, Ann. I am looking for their marriage records, but have had no luck. They had one child and are all buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN. After Ann died, he married my grandmother, Mary Connolly. Would appreciate any info you have on Ann that would lead me to George!

Eugene "Owen" MCCARTHY and Johanna "Anna" GRIFFIN

I am desparately trying to find Eugene "Owen" MCCARTHY and Johanna "Anna" GRIFFIN who baptized their twin sons, David and Denis 1813 Mahoonagh parish, Co Limerick. David is my ggreat-grandfather who married Margaretg SHANAHAN 28 Feb 1843 • Ashford, Raheenagh (Ráithíneach) , Ballagh (An Bealach), Killeedy (Cill Íde) civil parish, Barony of Glenquin Glenquin (Gleann an Choim) Co Limerick, Ireland.
Two of David's sons, Charles (my great-grandfather) and Edward (Josephine O'Hara wife) came to Manhattan, New York, New York 1879. Charles married Johanna "Elizabeth" EDWARDS.
I tend to believe, "Anna" could be from Monagea, Co Limerick as there's a Denis GRIFFIN and Catherine JORDAN who have a son, Laurence born 26 JAN 1784 • Arranagh, Monagea, Limerick, Ireland around the same time "Anna" would had been born ... the name DENIS does not appear anywhere in my line so according the the Irish Naming Pattern, this "could be" right but not 100%.

Fionnghuala - I believe my Aunt Veronica (Ronnie O'Sullivan (she married my fathers brother John) is a cousin of yours as it would appear that your fathers were brothers. She loved looking at your photos of your grandparents as she used to have a copy of it but it got lost over the years. She'd loved to know more about the Desmonds. I think I may have found you on facebook so I will try and message your there.

McCarthy Family in Kentucky circa late 1800

Hi,

I'm looking for information about for this McCarthy family:

Michael McCarthy, b. about 1838 in Ireland, married to Jane, also born in Ireland.

Daughter , Mary E McCarthy, b. 1859 in Saint Peter, Nicollet, MN.

Son, John McCarthy, b. 1861 in Minnesota

Son, Michael McCarthy, b. 1863 in Nebraska

Son, James McCarthy, b. 1869 in Kentucky

Family may have also had connections to Chicago or St. Louis.

I haven't confirmed that the following people are related, but having looked at who else was on the page with the elder Michael McCarthy, there may have been male relatives named Benedict, Cornelius, or Edward. These names appear close together in the 1860 census, and I thought in another census as well.

The core family mentioned above didn't stay in Minnesota long. I think they finally settled in Kentucky around 1870 (per later census records) and family recollection.

Josephine,

Perhaps I am mixing contexts.

Why would caring how the male leaders of a sept were chosen (tanistry) help me identify my ggg-grandfather's brother?

I know who my McCarthy ancestors were, and roughly where they originated. Is reading the Life and Letters of Florence McCarthy going to help me identify my ggg-grandfather's siblings?

There was a Timothy McCarthy in Lahanaght in Griffith's Valuation, and prior to that an Andrew McCarthy in the Tithe Applotment Books.

These names are very similar to other McCarthys in the general area. For example, a Jane McCarthy baptized 15-Jun-1822 to Andrew McCarthy Sowney and Ellen Hegarty in Lissane Upper. Until evidence indicates otherwise, I think this Andrew McCarthy was my ggg-grandfather's brother.

Given the patchiness and inconsistency in the availability of Irish records, I would recommend an autosomal (admixture) DNA test for anybody uncertain of their neighborhood origins. Your DNA matches might point you in a fruitful direction. I know where my mother and her parents were from in the Skibbereen area but through the test I am discovering connections we would never have known about otherwise.
