Seeking information on family of John McCarthy and Catherine O'Connor supposedly of County Cork Ireland.
They had at least:
- Mary Agnes m Timothy Kirby
- James m Margaret Sweeney
- Johanna m Michael McCarthy (yes just to add to the challenge)

These 3 children all came to St Louis and raised families there.
There may have been additional siblings: John, Dennis, and Jeremiah (however Dennis and Jeremiah may have been siblings to Johanna' s husband Michael)

Please see Johanna's Wikitree profile for more details and family tree:

Thank you for your message James. These Mccarthys seem to be pretty thick on the ground in Co Cork. Yours are a couple of generations earlier than what I have so it's not obvious whether they could be connected. I relate to Catherine Jane (Katie) Rowland who married Denis Florance Mccarthy so I've not tried much to chase the earlier Mccarthys - but I would like to contact descendants.

I have McCarthys from Inchigeelagh - Timothy McCarthy married Julia Cotter in 1829. Proving any connection won’t be easy when the parish registers only commenced only a decade earlier, in 1816.

I grew up on Long Island with both sides of my family living in Brooklyn. My mother Cecile was a Marschhauser born in 1914, daughter of John born in 1874, son of Adam born about 1846. They came over about 1880 and were from Bavaria. I know this thread is old but if you are still on Ancestry I’d love to hear from you.

MCCARTHY / SHANAHAN / GRIFFIN Limerick, Ireland c. 1800

I've reached a brick-wall and have no idea which way to attempt to hurdle over, dig under or go straight through.
Ok, my father's MCCARTHY surname has taken me back to 1813 Mahoonagh Parish, Co Limerick when my ggg-grandfather, Owen McCarthy and wife Johanna GRIFFIN were baptizing my gg-grandfather, David and his twin 1813 Mahoonagh Parish.
I cannot, for the life of me get any further but DNA doesn't even show MCCARTHY results but does show PAUL, LESLIE, MCKENZIE, and others I have no idea where, where, why, or how ...
I need to be able to continue with MCCARTHY / GRIFFIN to attempt to find the missing GENETIC ancestor. Ugh ... suggestions?
My twin brother has haplogroup R-A14 which I have no idea where to from here!!!!

Florence McCarthy of Houtzdale, PA - Connection

There is a connection to Florence McCarthy of Houtzdale, PA to my Michael Millan, also of Houtzdale and of Pittsburgh, PA. (see connection below). I am researching Michael Millan and his wife Catherine Nash. Both immigrated separately, as children, with their families from Ireland. - Michael Millan was born AUG. 1841 or AUG 1842 in Ireland. Both 1880 and 1900 censuses calculate his birth to 1842. Michael died in Pittsburgh, PA on Mar 8, 1907. No actual birthday is stated on the certificate, just that he died at aged 63, calculating his birth year to be 1844. He claims on his 1900 census that he immigrated to the United States in 1853, making him between 9-12 years old according to the birth year estimates of 1841 -1844. On Michael's death certificate it says his father's name was John Millan of Ireland. That's all we know of his parentage, and I have not yet found his parents. - Catherine Nash says she is 35 in the 1880 census giving her a birth year of 1845. She says she was 53 in the 1900 census giving her a birth year of 1847. On the 1900 census, Catherine claimed she arrived in the United States in 1852. I found her family coming in to the United States on the ship's passenger list of the British Barque "Florence" in June 5 1851. On the passenger list her father is listed as James Nash (age 30), wife May Nash (age 30), daughter Kate (age 5), and infant daughter, Bridget (infant). The ship's list calculates Catherine's birth year as 1846. Catherine died on July 24, 1922. Her death certificate (Allegheny Co. PA) gives her birth date as Feb 22, 1848. So Catherine has a range of birth years from 1845 - 1848. You would think that the death certificates would be the ultimate word on their birth dates, but they are filled out by family members, who may or may not know for sure. On Catherine's death certificate, it names er parents as, James Nash and Mary Pendergast, both of Ireland. I have not found either of her parents whereabouts. Michael and Catherine went on to have nine children (most of whom, lived and died in Allegheny Co., PA).

Before Michael and Catherine moved to Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co. PA to raise their family, Michael worked in the coal mines in Houtzdale, Clearfield Co. PA. There may be a connection with Michael Millan to a Mary Millan, who married Florence McCarthy, both of Houtzdale, Clearfield, PA. In July, 1887, Michael Millan personally appeared at the Special Examiner of the Pension Office, to make a duly sworn affidavit on behalf of Florence McCarthy (Case No. 176,998) to support Florence's pension claim. I believe, Florence's wife, Mary Millan, is Michael's sister.

If anyone is researching these families, I have lots of descendant information and happy to share. I am desperately trying to find the where abouts of Michael and Catherine's parents and anything about their ancestral family - where in Ireland were they from. Thanks, Cindy Kirkland
