Hi,
My great great grandmother was Catherine McCarthy and, according to family information, came from Graigue, Kerry and belonged to the family of the 'Florrie' McCarthy's in that area. She married Cornelius O'Keeffe of Meenscovane about 1850 -60 but have not been able to find any marriage record. I have also not been able to find a birth record for Catherine. I have found baptism records for 8 children born to them between 1860 - 1877.
Do you have any further information?

Yes, we are known as the Florrie McCarthys from Graigue. My grandfather, father and cousin are/were Florence McCarthys. My cousin lives at the homeplace in Graigue.I remember my father speaking of cousins the O'Keefe's. I'll check with my aunts and uncles back in Ireland. My father was one of nine and the only one to immigrate to America.

I have been searching for my great grandmother, Mary Catherine McCarthy, born in County Cork, came to the United States, married in 1917, and died in 1936 in Waterbury Connecticut. Her father was Patrick and mother Mary. I can find nothing on her. She had 4 children, Carmella, Catherine, Joseph and Paul. Her husband was Joseph Clemento. Anything?????

Barbie Berth--: Looks like you have a real problem with her parents names Patrick & Mary McCarthy from Cork around 1900. There would be many hundreds like that. The only good news is that all civil records in Ireland are now being digitized and you can start looking on line for marriage license's with their names.
I also suggest you consider getting her death certificate from the state records, for the actual date, and search local newspaper records for that city to see if any male McCarthy ancestors (ie: brothers) are listed, and if so try to track them down via civil or catholic church records. If successful have any currently living male McCarthy descendants join the McCarthy DNA Study. This may help in locating where in Co Cork they came from. Good Luck as you will need it.

How wonderful that you answered me. I do indeed have her death notice from the newspaper. It does not list any brothers or sisters, or even parents, The death certificate does list the parents though. I would love to just happen upon someone looking for a relative of hers i.e. her brother or sister (if she even had one) just like I'm looking for her, and even if the family had any cousins, that would be a great find as well. Thanks for the suggestions.

My gr-gr-gr grandfather was Daniel J. McCarthy (b. approx. 1840) of Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland. He married Nora Coughlin. Their son, Thomas J. McCarthy (b. approx. 1866) came to NYC in 1888, then married Lizzie Hurley (who was also from Kinsale) in NYC in 1894. We believe there may have been another brother who came over at the same time, Timothy. Their son, Lawrence, married Helen Lesko and had my father, Thomas J. in 1928.

Sorry - just saw this post. It is interesting that you have a Timothy, since we have a census showing my great-grandfather Thomas (married to Lizzie Hurley) living next door to Timothy McCarthy in NYC. We have no evidence that they are related, but it has always seemed likely.

Thomas was the son of Daniel McCarthy and Nora Couglin. Daniel did rent land from Lord Bandon, but my grandfather believed the family was from Kinsale. Other than my grandfather's claims about names and residences I have not been able to find any other records for Daniel and Nora. I would love to learn more.

Edward Adye McCarthy (1860-1939)

I'm searching for the parents of my wife's grandfather, Edward Adye McCarthy, who was born in Wexford.

He went to Trinity College, Dublin, played rugby for Leinster, and played in the first Irish international against Wales at Landsdowne Road in 1882.

His first wife was Harriet Barbara Elizabeth Bewley (1860-1900), who he married in 1890 in London. The Bewley's are an important Anglo-Irish family with roots in the Norman conquest.

Edward became the racing correspondent Robin Goodfellow for the Daily Mail, retiring in 1929.

His father's name was Michael; that's all I know.

Any information (or pointers) would be greatly appreciated.

HI!!!

Finally responded to your message--sorry!

There were 13 children--7 survived according to 1911 Census. Bridget Shea is my relation--really very far out.

Our records, depending on year, are Castlequin and Killinane (2 miles from Caherciveen).

Yours,
Mo (NYC)

My surname is McCarthy. Both lines of my dad's family originate in County Kerry. His father from Cahirciveen and his mother from Kenmare. Family Folklore has many of our McCarthy's heading for America , with some said to have gone to Chicago and some New York. That doesn't mean they all went their as it was said to be a massive family. If you find any reference to cahirciveen , then we could be related. Steve , Western Australia. can reply to moombaprince@yahoo.com.au Thanks

I am a McCarthy. My great grandfather was said to be a Timothy McCarthy and "was" from Cahirciveen. His children I believe got spread around the globe. My aunty told me the story that before immigrating to Australia in the 1950's , that she had relatives in Chicago that wanted her to immigrate there , and that she could help out by looking after their kid or kids. Back in the day the oldest son got the farm , and all the kids from those very large families had to move where it was more prosperous. My aunty's name is Mary and her mother's name was also Mary. If you believe we could related , please contact me at moombaprince@yahoo.com.au
