Florence McCarthy of Houtzdale, PA - Connection
There is a connection to Florence McCarthy of Houtzdale, PA to my Michael Millan, also of Houtzdale and of Pittsburgh, PA. (see connection below). I am researching Michael Millan and his wife Catherine Nash. Both immigrated separately, as children, with their families from Ireland. - Michael Millan was born AUG. 1841 or AUG 1842 in Ireland. Both 1880 and 1900 censuses calculate his birth to 1842. Michael died in Pittsburgh, PA on Mar 8, 1907. No actual birthday is stated on the certificate, just that he died at aged 63, calculating his birth year to be 1844. He claims on his 1900 census that he immigrated to the United States in 1853, making him between 9-12 years old according to the birth year estimates of 1841 -1844. On Michael's death certificate it says his father's name was John Millan of Ireland. That's all we know of his parentage, and I have not yet found his parents. - Catherine Nash says she is 35 in the 1880 census giving her a birth year of 1845. She says she was 53 in the 1900 census giving her a birth year of 1847. On the 1900 census, Catherine claimed she arrived in the United States in 1852. I found her family coming in to the United States on the ship's passenger list of the British Barque "Florence" in June 5 1851. On the passenger list her father is listed as James Nash (age 30), wife May Nash (age 30), daughter Kate (age 5), and infant daughter, Bridget (infant). The ship's list calculates Catherine's birth year as 1846. Catherine died on July 24, 1922. Her death certificate (Allegheny Co. PA) gives her birth date as Feb 22, 1848. So Catherine has a range of birth years from 1845 - 1848. You would think that the death certificates would be the ultimate word on their birth dates, but they are filled out by family members, who may or may not know for sure. On Catherine's death certificate, it names er parents as, James Nash and Mary Pendergast, both of Ireland. I have not found either of her parents whereabouts. Michael and Catherine went on to have nine children (most of whom, lived and died in Allegheny Co., PA).
Before Michael and Catherine moved to Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co. PA to raise their family, Michael worked in the coal mines in Houtzdale, Clearfield Co. PA. There may be a connection with Michael Millan to a Mary Millan, who married Florence McCarthy, both of Houtzdale, Clearfield, PA. In July, 1887, Michael Millan personally appeared at the Special Examiner of the Pension Office, to make a duly sworn affidavit on behalf of Florence McCarthy (Case No. 176,998) to support Florence's pension claim. I believe, Florence's wife, Mary Millan, is Michael's sister.
If anyone is researching these families, I have lots of descendant information and happy to share. I am desperately trying to find the where abouts of Michael and Catherine's parents and anything about their ancestral family - where in Ireland were they from. Thanks, Cindy Kirkland

Hi is there anyone out there that has McCarthy ancestors from Monard Cork. I have a dna connection to the this family and so does my half uncle. I have some information about them, John McCarthy b 1835 married Catherine Hayes, John's parents were Timothy McCarthy and Julia Daly. John and Catherine had 10 children and one of their children was Garrett McCarthy who married Ellen Mullane who in turn had a daughter Catherine McCarthy 1915 and she married Denis Cronin. Frances and Oswald McCarthy, South Africa 1915-1970's
I am trying to research the McCarthy family, which lived in South Africa, but had ties to Leicestershire, England.
Frances was the daughter of John Fredrick Robinson (1880-1952) and Mary Ann Robinson (1875-1953) who immigrated from Leicester to South Africa in 1901-1910. John was a cabinet maker.
Frances Robinson married Oswald McCarthy, and they had at least one son, John McCarthy. They travelled to England and America in the 1960's. She died in 1970.
Any help putting me in touch with the family is appreciated.
Cheers,
Gerry

Eugene "Owen" MCCARTHY and Johanna "Anna" GRIFFIN
I am desparately trying to find Eugene "Owen" MCCARTHY and Johanna "Anna" GRIFFIN who baptized their twin sons, David and Denis 1813 Mahoonagh parish, Co Limerick. David is my ggreat-grandfather who married Margaretg SHANAHAN 28 Feb 1843 • Ashford, Raheenagh (Ráithíneach) , Ballagh (An Bealach), Killeedy (Cill Íde) civil parish, Barony of Glenquin Glenquin (Gleann an Choim) Co Limerick, Ireland.
Two of David's sons, Charles (my great-grandfather) and Edward (Josephine O'Hara wife) came to Manhattan, New York, New York 1879. Charles married Johanna "Elizabeth" EDWARDS.
I tend to believe, "Anna" could be from Monagea, Co Limerick as there's a Denis GRIFFIN and Catherine JORDAN who have a son, Laurence born 26 JAN 1784 • Arranagh, Monagea, Limerick, Ireland around the same time "Anna" would had been born ... the name DENIS does not appear anywhere in my line so according the the Irish Naming Pattern, this "could be" right but not 100%.

Charles McCarthy born c.1805, Bandon, Co. Cork
Charles McCarthy is believed to have been born in Bandon in County Cork in about 1805. On the marriage certificate of his daughter Anne, his profession is given as Sergeant, Royal Marines. Daughter Anne was born c. 1835 in Canada, while daughter Catherine was born about 1840 in Woolwich, Kent, England. Catherine married a George Baker in England and had several children, Anne married a William Buel in England, with no issue.
This is all I know of my McCarthy ancestor - can anyone help with more information? I've been unable to find him in the Naval records in London.

McCarthy Family in Kentucky circa late 1800
Hi,
I'm looking for information about for this McCarthy family:
Michael McCarthy, b. about 1838 in Ireland, married to Jane, also born in Ireland.
Daughter , Mary E McCarthy, b. 1859 in Saint Peter, Nicollet, MN.
Son, John McCarthy, b. 1861 in Minnesota
Son, Michael McCarthy, b. 1863 in Nebraska
Son, James McCarthy, b. 1869 in Kentucky
Family may have also had connections to Chicago or St. Louis.
I haven't confirmed that the following people are related, but having looked at who else was on the page with the elder Michael McCarthy, there may have been male relatives named Benedict, Cornelius, or Edward. These names appear close together in the 1860 census, and I thought in another census as well.
The core family mentioned above didn't stay in Minnesota long. I think they finally settled in Kentucky around 1870 (per later census records) and family recollection.
